San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world, exhibiting some of the rarest creatures. More than 4,000 animals representing 800 species live in enclosures closely simulating their natural environments. Highlights include walk-through aviaries, koalas, giant pandas, an impressive assembly of primates and a large reptile collection. Habitats also include Gorilla Tropics, Absolutely Apes and Monkey Trails. Inside Monkey Trails, Ituri Forest is a re-creation of a mysterious African rain forest. Polar Bear Plunge is a re-creation of a summer tundra habitat, complete with a pool with an underwater viewing area. The Giant Panda Research Station exhibits critically endangered giant pandas. The zoo is landscaped with more than 700,000 plants representing 6,500 plant species, including tropical and subtropical vegetation. Moving sidewalks stretch from deep canyons to the zoo's upper levels. An aerial tramway runs from the main entrance to the Horn and Hoof Mesa, 0.3 miles away. Animal shows are presented at Wegeforth Bowl and Hunte Amphitheatre. Summer evening entertainment is provided by musicians, magicians, storytellers and acrobats. Narrated bus tours, stroller and wheelchair rentals and picnic facilities are available.
