Rental Car Insurance

With driving, there is always a risk of getting involved in a car accident. But that's not the only thing that could possibly ruin your trip and make the rental car agency charge you for vehicle damage. Doors can be dented by careless passengers, bushes or trees can scratch paint, and sometimes there are things that can dent your bumper while you back out of a parking space. Rental Car Insurance covers these expensive accidents. Without it, you, the renter, are responsible for any damage you might incur. However, you might only have the car for a day or two and are willing to take the chance. Doing this could save a little money. Sometimes that's ok, but it is always a good idea to have car rental insurance. Even if you purchase the insurance, be aware that driving dangerously can void your contract, leaving you without coverage.

All Rental Car Agencies will offer insurance to you when you pick up your car. The fees for the insurance can vary from $12 to $25 dollars a day, depending on what type of coverage you purchase. If you decline the agency's coverage, you will be asked to sign or initial a statement saying that you have done so in your contract. If you own a vehicle, check your own car insurance policy, because some auto insurance carriers offer coverage on rental vehicles. So make sure you know if your policy includes this or not. Also, if you have a credit card in your name, check with your credit card company because some of them cover basic damages to many types of rental cars.

Types of Insurance

  • Collision Damage Waiver, Loss Damage Waiver, Physical Damage Waiver - For this type of insurance you'll usually pay a daily fee. It does not cover damages to other people's cars, but it protects you from being charged by the rental car agency in the event that your rental car is damaged or stolen. However, it is not considered collision insurance.

  • Personal Liability Coverage - Some Rental Car companies offer this type of insurance to cover the amount over and above that which your personal car insurance carrier will cover.

  • Personal Accident Coverage - This type of insurance is usually offered by your personal auto or health policy. It covers your personal injuries with a single payment for you or a passenger. Check with your insurance company about this coverage.

  • Personal Property Insurance - This coverage provides insurance for any of your personal possessions that are damaged or stolen.
